The Lake House - 4/5

F*** up. It was good, a really cool idea which obviously wasn't a Hollywood one (it's a remake of the Korean flick Il Mare which I haven't seen ;)). I'd order the DVD off the net but the Region 1 cover is pants.

Great film.

Make her pay then, it's good. But then again, I don't think it's your cup of tea/mug of beer.

Our film lecturer said this film was terrible. Rottentomatoes gave it a 36% ;)

Personally I don't think Keanu can act his way out of a paper bag.

Just out of curiosity, how would a competent actor act their way out of a paper bag?

While acting within the paper bag, he/she could be swinging their arms around (depending on the scene, actors abilities), which could potentially cause a tear in the bag, hence, they act their way out of a paper bag, if you're still in the bag at the end of the scene, you fail, and have to spend the night with Hard Gay: (some people fail on purpose ---> Yep, he was the original Gollum)

Posted Image

Another example is if the actor is in a smoking scene and they're waving their arms around they could burn a hole, where they could escape the bag (they would be classed good/great in this situation), if they were bad actors, they'd either die from lack of oxygen, or singe their toe hairs (assuming they're barefoot) by dropping the lighter/cigarette. I thought this was common knowledge?! WTF?!

Anyway:

UltraViolet: 5/10 (Sci-Fi / Action)
I like the art style, but everything else was pretty bad, including the sh*t CG.

Ah, I see.... here I was thinking it had something to do with quantum physics.

Oh, I forgot:

Take the Lead: 7/10 (Dance movie)

Pretty much your average underdog story... great dancing if you like that stuff (I do). And Antonio Banderas is the man, and he tangoes with this smoking hot chick... good scene.

Oh, and speaking of dancing, I'm in the company of the Beauty and the Beast musical that's showing in Takapuna in September... you know, if anyone enjoys that sort of thing. It's a stage adaption of the 1993 Disney movie. Pretty wicked. WETA made the sets and costumes.
Starts 9th September at the Bruce Mason Centre. Tickets at Ticketek.

He's sort of like Schwarzenegger, you know? He fits well into certain roles, like The Matrix or Speed where he just had to speak in a monotone and act cool, but I don't think he has much diversity in his acting ability.

Check out My Own Private Idaho and Bill and Ted for Reeves acting differently.

He has a grieving scene in Lake House which I really hit me, was pretty powerful.

Saw Thank You For Smoking just before, another goodie! Undecided on a score as yet though.

For some reason I think I'm going to really feel disappointed with Snakes. Everyone's talking it up so much and I reckon I'll just end up thinking "meh". It can only be awesome if it sinks to Ed Wood levels. We'll see when I see it in a week or so.

Keanu can act, just in certain roles. He was great in A Scanner Darkly, which is a f***ing awesome movie, but not one for action fans.

I saw BloodRayne last night. Not brilliant, not awful, but watchable. I'd give it about a 5.5 or something. But all this Uwe Boll ruins video games stuff is bollocks. It's about on par with most video game stuff and it's certainly better than the video game movies Paul Anderson has made -- except maybe Mortal Kombat.

RV (supposedly a comedy): 4/10

So, so bad. Has Robin Williams in it. I tell you, he should have been shot dead years ago.

Hoodwinked (comedy): 7/10

Some very funny moments. Especially the squirell.

Fearless (action): 8/10

Much slower pace than I was expecting, but very cool nonetheless. I'd probably have given it a 9/10 if the version I'd seen wasn't in Chinese, with some dodgy tranlation in the subtitles. :S

United 93 - 7/10
Far from the Flag-waving cheese-fest that I was expecting, this is actually a really good telling of the story of what happened on "September 11th". It's just showing how people would react in a given situation, it doesn't even make the hijackers out to be bad people - in some sense they are the main characters.

Mr And Mrs Smith 8/10

Not to be taken seriously of course. A great B-grade action movie with explosions, car chases and some funny scenes. A good addition to my action library. <_<
