This week marked the release of Tacoma – developer Fullbright’s second game. Quite often in this weekly feature, we talk about AAA games and how they pertain to the state of the industry, or just an interesting news story which captured our attention.

This week, let’s take some time to appreciate the smaller titles – those often made by tiny teams, or a single person. We’re also keeping it simple:

What are some of your favourite indie games?

Maybe it’s Stardew Valley, with its tight gameplay loop and relaxing music. Or is it Darkest Dungeon, with its stress-inducing mechanics and macabre art style. How about Binding of Isaac, and its sheer amount of replayability?

Have your say over at NZGamer.com, or in the comments below!

In the one person realm, definitely Doukutsu Monogatari - Cave Story. Great gameplay, story, music, boss fights, and secrets galore!

Two people - Aquaria. Much the same reactions really.

Then there are the old days of Shareware, which I guess was much the same. And with that in mind, so many games by Ambrosia software.

I played journey and no mans sky... do those count? Journey was good but not something I'd ever replay. NMS I may return too one day.
I hear great things about hollow knight but it looks boring to me.. Shadow of Adam looks interesting but just because it looks like an ff clone.

Recent favourites are Oxenfree and Abzu. Firewatch was also great, but loses points for having a fairly limp wrapup.

More recently for my list, Fez was excellent if insanely puzzly and had to look up heaps. Surprised no one has said Ori. I would venture Child of Light if it weren't for the crazy boss difficulty that really just stopped me playing.

I'm* not sure what it was.

It's hard to tell what is an indie game anyway right.

1. Super meat Boy - insanely fun and difficult in equal measure

2. FEZ - really beautiful and loved the soundtrack. Nice puzzler.

3. Dust: An Elysian tale

4. Firewatch - loved the setting and the story was great up until the rushed wrap up

5. Gone Home

Lots of these games came included with the PS plus monthly games and there is a good chance that i would never had played them if this wasn't the case.

Human Fall Flat is pretty special. Also love Firewatch's style.
