This week sucked. There’s really no other way to put it. Heavy earthquakes wracked much of the southern-reaches of New Zealand – causing untold damage to buildings, and disrupting people’s lives. It sucked.

Quite often in these times, we turn to things to help us cope – food, books, movies, and of course games. Be it something with a deep story to keep your mind off the news, or the meditative qualities of grinding – everyone has a game they can turn to. So, this week we ask you:

What’s your comfort game?

What do you turn to when you need to escape? Why is your game so good at helping you through the tough times? Any recommendations for other readers?

Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

When real life sucks; I know there's always a town full of adorable animals who are always excited to see their mayor.

Timing: pokemon. I played my first pokemon game in over a decade after an especially brutal break up. The simple and fun gameplay with no rooting in reality made for a satisfying addictive escape.

Since then I've been jamming them on release but they are fantastic escape games for me.

Angry/mad/frustrated - any FPS games mainly COD games for every hit I make makes me feel satisfied and clam

Stressed out - RPG/TPS games mainly The Division or DMC for some reason they tend to open my mind to other options

Personally I'm not sure I have a comfort game as such. Often it can be a case of jumping on whatever game my psn friends are playing, jumping into a party and just having company, Destiny, The Division etc.

I'm the same, Destiny is probably my go to for the party banter. I'm a bit over it at present though so will no doubt start focusing on Battlefield from now on. To be honest I'm struggling to get motivated to switch the console on at the moment (twice in the last week only), might take an extended break from gaming over the Christmas period I think.

If I need to relax and chill out I'd rather do that listening to records or reading books personally.

Anything with an easy mode; for some reason fallout 4 on easy just going thru one shotting Raiders in slow motion doing the side missions is relaxing for me.

Same here. I always play games on easy when available (except sports titles) for a more fun relaxing experience, which is the whole point of gaming for me, to have fun and relax. This is often met with a bit of flak though.

More so games I will just keep going back to eventually, forever, PC stuff so not much use to most of you I'd say :)

Escape Velocity: Override

Aquaria

Cave Story

Can play through over and over and never get over them, fantastic stuff.
