Some highlights so far

Rumor that a kayak or was it a canoe overturned because it hit a sofa.

Part of the rowing was supposedly like whitewater & is called off today because of the wind.

NZ Shooter gets Silver Medal

Brutal crash in women's road race http://www.stuff.co....omens-road-race(I mean where are the safety barriers.  At least have some haybales like motorsport.)

Sickening leg break for male gymnast http://www.therock.n...30/Default.aspx

Women's seven are through to the quarterfinals.

US wins a gold medal in shooting & all the policital people jump on the bandwagon.  Republicans says great work & Liberals saying what a surprise US doing well in something that involves guns.

Those are pretty shocking highlights lol. That's the "news" highlights I guess, but not the most enjoyable stuff.

3 seconds shaved off the world record in the women's 400m individual medley - and the previous record was set in London 2012, how do they keep getting so much faster? I guess it is sensible for this Olympics to be about shaving things off.

First ever gold medal for Belgium in the men's cycling road race - that's awesome, but 1st and 2nd only just beat the Polish guy in the closing 1km. I wonder if Poland have had medals before?

First ever gold medal for Sweden in the women's 100m butterfly - again, amazing, I guess they really do focus mainly on the winter stuff over there. And I guess it helps that the water would be really cold and you'd want to get out asap :)

Yes I could also comment on the horrid stuff in the water & the condition of the athletes' village.

The other main news would be in the tennis area when Novak Djokovic & the Williams sister were knocked out in the 1st round.  Djokovic by Juan Del Potro (Argentina) currently ranked 145th in the world & the Williams sisters by Czech pair Barbora Strycova and Lucie Safarova in straight sets.

One of Great Britain's female gymnasts also landed on her neck after not landing a somersault properly but came back & did the vault.

The highs for NZ most of our rowing crews getting through without having to do a repecharge rowoff thing.

The lows I suppose would be our results in the cycling road race being miles behind & also Lauren Boyle not making it through in the swimming.

After today's record breaking records in the pool, it's pretty clear Merfolk were discovered some time in the last 20 years and their DNA bred into some of these new generation swimmers.

Man that is interesting re the tennis. I haven't followed it because they have enough of their own tournaments to keep track of. They're only a month out of Wimbledon, and I guess they were prioritising that more. Good for Del Potro, he has been out for ages, hope he keeps doing well so close to home!

The rugby was close with the USA playing well. Really enjoyed the rowing even if one of the poor boats sank.

Continuing to prove that rankings mean nothing Germany beat the Women Blacksticks 2-1.

NZ Women's 7s beat Great Britain 25-7 & will face Australia in the final.

The equestrian team made a huge recovery from their Dressage placing of 6th yesterday & currently sit 2nd after the Cross country section.

Luuka Jones is through to the semifinals of the Canoe Slalom.

Yet more failure in the swimming.

Michael Phelps gets his 19th Gold medal in the 4x100 Relay.

And my thought after that 4x100 was that there are surely few other places you would see four quite so athletic males scantily clad and in a group hug situation. Not sure what to make of that.

Watching some canoe slalom this morning. That stuff looks like such a lot of effort for little gain, exhausting just watching.

Interesting, I agree, if you reverse that and do that with female athletes that would not be tolerated in the slightest.

Went from could have had gold to no medal in equestrian 3 day event. Dammit. Still the individual ones there at least. Just heard we lost men's sevens as well. This is going badly.

Yes to Japan of all teams plus we lost Sonny Bill & Joe Weber to injury.  Sonny Bill out for up to 9 months plus his ambulance driver got lost.  They recovered to beat Kenya 28-5 & now have to face Great Britain at 3:30AM Thursday.

Bond & Murray through to their final.  Lightweight men's 4 also through.  Both double sculls teams out in the semifinals. Mahe Drysdale & Emma Twigg through to the semis.

Football Ferns most likely out after going down 3-0 to France.

Men's Blacksticks lost 3-2 to Spain.

Swimmers yet again sucked.

Plus the diving pool turned a lovely colour. 1470779579560.jpg

Does this mean we can stop jerking ourselves off about what a great sporting nation we are? I mean, I feel for the people who have trained for years only to sputter when the big day comes as no one wants to go through that, but maybe this will mean we end with the charade that we're God's chosen people when it comes to sports.

We've done so very well the last few lots of games. This is disappointing on that note. At least our media are not as bloodthirsty as the AUS media when their people don't perform. We certainly outperform a lot of larger countries though, so I think there's plenty of room for pride. I definitely don't think there's a need to discourage people.
