Thoughts?

I really wish he'd stuck it out another season and made something of it.

Although, potentially a big up for Fiji 7's if he turns out to be good at sevens.

I reckon he was going to be cut in August, well that's the rumour...  and so they gave him/or his agent gave him options...

There is more to it than him saying... oh hey Ive decided to not play my dream role and go play 7's instead. Makes no sense... unless he was going to not make the final cut.

He was cut, then went cleared waivers without being picked up by any other teams, then he was re signed to the niners practice squad. There's nothing wrong with that - he had not played competitive football at all prior to going over there. Decent time on the practice squad would have served him very well.

Thing is, it's not to do with his options. He had to work his way back to the starting squad, but everyone recognised that potential.

Looks as though he feels he's got a nice decent shot at a medal in rio, and didn't want to pass that up.

I fee if he'd stuck out at he niners he might have made something of himself.

^probably what spawn said.

Maybe the coach set him goals and says if he didn't meet them he'd be cut and they were too big an ask.

Apparently he may not be eligible for 7's due to the timing to do with anti-doping and the NFL's non compliance with the doping organisation the Olympics use. Which is unfortunate but fortunate for the players place he may have taken.

Ah sh*t Spawn sorry - were you referring to this coming season?

Then yeah, might have been the case.

Re doping - that's a sad state of affairs.

Yeah Im talking about this year, not last year.  He made it through the first cut this year but I think somethings happened like he's been told he's unlikely to make it for the next one, as I said rumour was he was unlikely to make the next cut, maybe for the reasons Drunk talked about.

Well he's been given clearance this morning by World Rugby Exec for the next event playing for Fiji. So guess that answers that.. :)

As talented as he is, I can't see him making a successful transition to Sevens having played in 1 tournament and training with the team for a few months. Look at how hard it has been for some of the All Blacks to try and transition back to 7's and they are coming from having played 15s, not a year with NFL and then NRL. Even if he was going straight from NRL into rugby I can't recall any players recently who have been a success straight away, they have all had to work at it and taken a few games/months to get into it.

And its not like Fiji struggle for player depth and need him. If it was a team like the Cook Islands I could understand them wanting to rush him in, but not Fiji.

No doubt he will prove me wrong now though!

Spot on Argsy. Sevens is a totally different game.

Despite that, it is great to see Fiji getting the signing of a big name like Hayne seeing as many in his position would choose to pledge allegiance to Aus (or in many cases, NZ).

The pessimist in me thinks it probably has more to do with him having a better chance winning a medal with Fiji than with Australia, rather than wanting to represent his country - case in point playing league for Fiji at 2008 World Cup and then changing to represent Australia at the next one.

Yeah he'll struggle with the tempo I think, probably wont be fit enough, nor have the stamina to stay quick especially with a team of Fijian flyers.

Im interested more to know what he's going to do after it... back to NRL probably?

And see if we get more of a story on why this BS retirement from NFL (can we even call it a retirement?)
