Hey everyone, I noticed we didn't really have a Github thread around here. I know there are a few programmers here, so why don't we share what we are working on?

My Github account is JackWFinlay. Post your Github/BitBucket/whatever link and let's see what you are up to.

Wow, that's beautiful. My attempts at web design are pretty meh. I did this: http://jackwfinlay.github.io/ in a few hours. It's my first real attempt at something. It's using Bootstrap for the responsiveness.

Gotta start somewhere bro.

I bet Defragger won't divulge how long he truly spent doing that.

I don't really have much design skills myself, I can extend a design though, so far that's been really useful for me.

Bootstrap isn't as sh*t as everyone makes it out to be.
But the more I use it, the more I'm wanting to take more and more out.

I only really appreciate the grid system, and the .row .col-*-* syntax.
Starting to overwrite every thing else. LOL

I quite like Bootstrap. I didn't know that there was anyone against it. Some of the pre-designed stuff is really nice like tables, tabs, and buttons. We use it for a few projects at work. On one of our projects, someone was dumb and modified the bootstrap classes in the the bootstrap CSS file itself - I'll have to fix it at some point if we ever want to use an updated version...

I've done some more tweaks to my site, to make it a bit more responsive. Any suggestions?

I just set up forwarding, so the site is now live at jackfinlay.com

Use bootstrap via scss, why bother not doing that? f*** old css...

People are against the concept of everything being done for you and bloat.
Bootstrap is VERY bloated.

One site I made has a 9k line css file.
3k is me...
Rest is bootstrap stuff don't use...

The other reason to not want the in built sh*t, is that you'll look like everyone else using it.
(Having said that you can change the colours in the bootstrap .scss files which makes it adaptable to a different look.)

I only use the .table-responsive and table classes. they're great.

The rest I don't care for, the first few sites I used the nav as well.

But now I roll my own for mobile navs.

Can't reach your site atm. Getting chrome "Aw Snap"

Cool, thanks for the info. SCSS looks amazing, I'll definitely give it a go. I'm not sure what you mean by using bootstrap via scss? Is there a way to have it just include the classes that are actually used?

EDIT: I worked out how to do it. I grabbed bootstrap-sass via bower and just imported the classes I needed.

EDIT2: And now the styles aren't being applied. Great.

EDIT3: Finally got it going properly again. Turns out I missed a couple of imports in my custom bootstrap .scss

I went back to using the full bootstrap set. I put in a collapsing navbar and couldn't find the right partial files I needed. I tried to roll my own navbar this evening but it didn't go so great. Any tips? I don't really like some of the things the bootstrap one does.

Uhh.

Bootstrap nav works for me...

Just grab the html from an example.
And got back to using the full suite.

Sounds like you trimmed a feature out. Don't forget the js files

Also roll your own isn't hard, just most times you may double up on html.

Media queries are key.

Looks interesting.

I'm currently working on a shitty twitter clone on the MEAN stack. It's on my github under '8words'. I'm just learning how to use the different parts of the stack. I have been streaming it to livecoding.tv most nights too.

I started having another play with my site. I decided to see how far I could get without bootstrap, and I did pretty well I think. The nav is all custom with a bit of JQuery. You can check it out at http://test.jackfinlay.com (I set up another repo to host my play area - I wish you could redirect to different branches with sub-domains).

I still haven't had a chance to test it on Windows just yet. Hopefully it looks okay - I don't think Helvetica Neue will be available though.

I went to university for a degree in computer science. It's easy to start on your own though with things like codeschool, Lynda.com, pluralsight, and team treehouse. Try get a free trial to one of those and see if you like it. I suggest maybe starting with the C# language as it's easy to use and beginner friendly in terms of resources. It has great documentation and coverage on stackoverflow.com ( your new best friend).
