What retro video games are you playing at the moment? And what is it you enjoy (or loathe!) about them in particular?

At the moment I've been sating my cravings for 16-bit era video games by working through the Soul/Gaia series (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia/Time, and Terranigma - ring any bells with anyone?).

I just completed Illusion of Gaia actually (an action/adventure game on the SNES). I loved the rather over-the-top, Japanese-flavoured plot about a Comet passing by Earth whose light mutates all forms of life beyond recognition. It's a pretty linear game but the story is enjoyable and has a few intense moments as well! The soundtrack also contains some of the best music I've ever heard on a SNES game too.

I'm doing the side scroll beat em ups atm. I was playing Streets of Rage 2 the other night, and tonight looks like Batman is the game of choice.

The music in Batman used to always hype me up when I was younger lol

Gotta love the SNES classics! Video games on the SNES, based on movies and shows, generally weren't half bad at least. Well, in comparison to some of their modern counterparts anyway.

Why not? It seems almost 16-bit. Haha. There are a lot of underrated gems on that device! *cough* Mother 3 *cough* *hack*.

Played Streets of Rage 2 on Sunday and clocked that bad boy in 1:12.

Pretty short game.

Play the 3DS version, it's way more accessible than the N64 version, its smoother, graphically better and many negatives from the older version have been tweaked.

Yea that's what I was playing. It runs well it just seems a little boring. I'll hold onto it and maybe try it again at another date.

I also have OoT on 3DS, picked it up after all the BotW hype. I never played the original - I can totally get what everyone loved about it back in the day and I'm sure there's a lot of nostalgia but it feels like it's been improved upon by so many other games since then that it almost feels unnecessary for me to be playing it over all the new releases.

I'm only about 10 or so hours in, cleared a couple of temples, love the gyro / aim controls and the game looks stunning in 3d, but I think it's a 'save for a rainy-day' title for me.

Nice! One of my favourite Megadrive games. Did you ever play Dark Savior on Sega Saturn? Very similar game, and just as fun.
