Andy Whitfield. Aged 39
Probably best known as Spartacus from the Spartacus: Blood and Sand series.
Was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma before series 2 was due to start production approx 18 months ago.

Dan Wheldon(33) died in a pretty massive car pile-up/crash today during the indy 300 or one of those indy things.

Yeah, so he wasn't a celebrity per se... it's probably more Sports news, but it's no less worthy a topic there than who is wrestling who in the WWE.

If nothing else, it raises questions like is it time the Indys reassessed the use of big oval courses, and why is their fatality record in the last few years so much worse than the F1s?

As for the general topic in hand.. so cool, what the hell.. let's just no longer mention it any time someone more well known than ourselves by the general public dies.. It's a gaming forum, so lets just keep on topic.. get rid of the music section, the TV section..

Better send the memo out to TVNZ and Mediaworks not to make mention that, god forbid, if Jonah doesn't make it through the next year or two, because it will only start a string of "he's no more special than me" rants on the interwebz..

yep indeed quite interesting seeing how more people die in slower and technically easier track(oval) compared to the F1 races.

And yeah i also agree with the lower part, i made this thread so we dont have to make a new thread everytime someone famous dies, but saying stuff like "oh who cares, he is just another person" etc is a bit lame. If hideo kojima died, would those people prefer it doesnt even get discussed/mentioned on nzg, or???

No, because he is a video game director. And this is a video game forum.

ah, not so. Indycars have a higher top speed and higher average top speed (due to not having to slow for tight corners) F1s have more power and are lighter but have way more downforce which slows them.
also the track may be simple, but that means it's more tactically challenging.
In F1 you're often only having to battle one or 2 cars for position, indy you can have 12 or more within .2 of a second of each other, all with open wheels centimetres apart.
i'd feel much safer in an F1 race. crashes tend to happen under braking whereas in indy you're most likely going well over 300km when sh*t hits the fan.

RIP dan. now our boy needs a new teammate.

then why is there a movie, music, off-topic section in the gaming forum :)
In the end kojima is just another person, just like jobs, michael jackson etc. A rich famous dude who didnt know any of us.

The reason people care is because these people had an effect on our lives, whether we owned an ipod, listened to MJ when we needed to get pumped up, or loved to watch racing. Fact is people will always care more about these people than abdul from nigeria. 'Cause thats how it is.

Be honest, people who really dont care wouldnt even click this thread, just like me, i dont care about call of duty, so i wont be in those threads.

Look bro, don't let an un-flammatory comment get the best of you man. I was merely commenting on the title of the thread in regards to the content. Yes it's a tragedy that he died and it shouldn't have happened. Lets move on and keep the discussion going.

Stungaf made some interesting points, has anybody seen Senna? That's probably really relevant right now.
