Whichever way you slice it, Sony's NGP (or PSP2) looks to be the most powerful handheld gaming device ever.

It's more powerful than Apple's iPad & according to John Carmack: "low level APIs will allow the Sony NGP to perform about a generation beyond smartphones with comparable specs". That last bit of his tweet was interesting, since smartphones are NOT running comparable specs yet... LG Optimus 2X being the first DUAL-core smartphone, let alone QUAD-core ala NGP. We get a good idea of what beast this thing really is.

Some fun facts:
•CPU: ARM® Cortex™-A9 core (4 core) GPU SGX543MP4+ External
•Dimensions: Approx. 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth) (tentative, excludes largest projection)
•Rear touch pad: Multi touch pad (capacitive type)
•Cameras: Front camera, Rear camera
•Sound: Built-in stereo speakers, Built-in microphone
•Sensors: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass
•Location: Built-in GPS / Wi-Fi location service support
•Keys / Switches: PS button, Power button, Directional buttons (Up/Down/Right/Left), Action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square), Shoulder buttons (Right/Left), Right stick, Left stick, START button, SELECT button, Volume buttons (+/-)
•Wireless: Communications Mobile network connectivity (3G), IEEE 802.11b/g/n (n = 1×1)(Wi-Fi) (Infrastructure mode/Ad-hoc mode), Bluetooth® 2.1+EDR (A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)

So... Thoughts?

This reminds me of the PSP vs Ds Battle. I'm just concerned about the pricing. PS3 graphics on a handheld isn't cheap, I'm guessing 400 US? Sony might be pricing way too much to be competitive with the 3DS

It reminds me too much of the PSP, I think in places like NZ where the bulk the population don't really have time for 'gaming on the go' it may not sell too well.

Though the PSP did sell as many units as the Xbox 360 to date in 2010.

It's a very cool unit, and does indeed have quite the powerhouse inside but I have to agree with Ron that we don't seem to have as big a portable gamer population as your Japans and Americas.

Though, I was looking forward to this unit and the 3DS but then I started playing my iOS games and found the fulfillment for quick portable gaming there.

Yeah, the numbers are looking like $300-$350US at the moment. If they launch at that price it'll be competative with the 3DS's $250US just because of the sheer power this thing has. But we all know Sony's not the best at pricing competatively.

Meh, it's anyway a day-1 buy for me :D

When it was announced I was quite surprised that it was more than I could have ever expected. A handheld PS3, that really is impressive.

The games however... Needs more fun titles. I'll probably be getting one but I hope to buy more games than just monster hunter.

Personally I'm looking forward to this. I think it will appeal more to a more niche handheld community. It might not sell as much as the 3DS or the DS but to me its more worthed. Granted I have not tried the 3DS so I can't comment but I find the DS really bad in terms of visual quality and it puts me off a lot of times - that plus the huge reliance on casual gaming titles, and incessant mario games. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the DS. I'm just saying that I personally would prefer something like the PSP or NGP over the DS and I'm guessing theres others there like me (probably not that many though)

On face value I love the PSVita, and then I think about how often I actually used my PSP and think maybe it's not such a good idea. There was never enough games on it I liked.

Yeah, that is true. But I think that Sony is trying to take a new approach to the Vita this time. The low price and specs which show that they listened to us PSP owners who had many complaints about the original PSP. An Uncharted on the Vita is a great start.

From what i read it should be compatible with all the online PSP stuff, such as the downloadable games, im pretty sure the comics would work.

As someone who travels quite a lot from uni to home on different versions of transport, I generally use my phone as a gaming platform (Samsung Galaxy). HOWEVER, I think I'm going to buy this just because I think the games look amazing and will offer the functionality of the android games I love, plus some PS titles I really want to get a chance to play as I do not own a PS3...

Agree 100%. I miss my playstation 2 since converting to xbox 4 years ago. WOuld be great to play some of the classics.

Plus we get the best of both world by having an xbox 360 for home and what is basically a portable PS3 :)

I noticed that the vita is $500 at Dick Smith for the Wifi version.

Are people prepared to pay that much?

Personally i was hoping for $400 and $450 at the most.

Does anyone know a way of importing safely from America or a similar place where the price is only US$250 which is about NZ$300........

$500 sounds about right, close to DS, and about what the PSP was at launch...I think?
